“OPINION: On Friday, a Court of Appeal decision cleared the way for the Church Property Trust (CPT) to continue demolishing the earthquake-damaged Christ Church Cathedral. Psychiatrist Alma Rae says that the urge to take it down seems to be based on fear.

Last year The Press ran a poll seeking to discover where opinion lay on the question of whether the Anglican cathedral should or should not be demolished.

By an extremely narrow margin, those wanting it gone were in a majority. When asked their reasons, 39 per cent of those wanting to demolish cited safety as their main reason. In other words, fear ruled.”

You’ve lost; give up and put your condierable weight aand talents behind a stunning new cathedral whihc could incorporate much that is salvagable from the old one. The old one is not worth saving.

I agree with what Dr Alma Rae has said about the Cathedral. The one thing that no-body ever realises or mentions is that it is NOT about the safety as much as it is the Anglican Property Trust using safety as a smoke screen to benefit hugely from MONEY that the demolition will put in their pockets. We have been blindfolded by the safety issue completely.

We visited NZ in 2010, along with other visitors we went into Christchurch to see the cathedral. We were a bit surprised to not to see more original buildings to be honest, but the cathedral was worth seeing. Forward on a few years from now and what will future visitors be drawn in to see? Christchurch is often compared with Oxford in the UK, with it’s “dreaming spires”, if the cathedral is replaced with some modern building there will be fewer parallels to be drawn, and one modern city looks very much like another. If you don’t try to preserve your heritage, the long term draw for tourist visitors will suffer. Leah has hit the nail firmly on the head. I can see a time when the only part of Christchurch tourists will see is the airport, or maybe that’s already becoming the case?

I totally agree! When you are travelling overseas and say you are from Christchurch, anyone who has been here, remembers it as the beautiful NZ city with the lovely old buildings and cathedral. NZ has so few heritage buildings, we cannot destroy the few gorgeous pieces of architecture that we have been blessed with. I love the english garden city vibe of Christchurch, its why I left Auckland to move here. I definitely do not want us to forget the soul of our city in the rebuild and lose what draws people to us.
