Three central-city precincts should form the foundation of the new Christchurch, a renowned Australian planning expert says.
University of Melbourne emeritus professor David Yencken yesterday gave a public lecture on lessons for Christchurch from the transformation of Melbourne’s inner city in the 1980s.
He was head of the Victorian Government’s Planning and Environment Ministry, which more than 30 years ago, was charged with reviving Melbourne’s central business district.
Melbourne is now rated one of the world’s most liveable cities.
Yencken said three precincts in Christchurch could be redeveloped immediately.
